The basis of corrugated cardboard begins with the use of shaped papers for the transportation of delicate materials in the mid-19th century, and its patent was received in England in 1856, but its use as we understand it now takes place in New York by Albert Jones, Jones; develops cylindrical corrugated cardboard for the first time to protect lamp glasses. The first machine, on the other hand, was designed by G. Smith in 1874 in order to produce high-volume corrugated cardboard and produced by Oliver Long in the same year in parallel with the invention developed by Jones. The corrugated cardboard production technique known today is also based on this machine.
THE BASIS OF CORRUGATED BOARD
Born in Scotland in 1890, Robert Gair found the first corrugated cardboard box, which made a wind-up box by cutting the corrugated cardboard plates in half. One day, when he received an order to protect the typewriters that were damaged in transportation, he started fabrication production, corrugated cardboard replaced wooden packaging in the 20th century and its use has become widespread. Corrugated cardboard boxes were first used for packaging materials that could easily break during transportation such as glass, porcelain and bowls, then they were used as fruit crates in order to ensure that fruits reach the consumer without being damaged, and today it has taken its place as an indispensable packaging material.
HISTORY OF CORRUGATED
The first corrugated material was produced in England to be used in the inner parts of hats and was patented in 1856. In 1871, the "corrugated" material did not come out of the hats of English gentlemen until the American Albert L. Jones used the corrugation, which he pasted on paper, to protect glass bottles. Corrugated Cardboard was first produced in our country by SEKA in Izmit 83 years after its production in the world. According to OMÜD, 717,794 tons of corrugated cardboard was produced in our country in 2000 and 6666 people work in the sector. Per capita consumption of corrugated cardboard in Turkey is an average of 11 kg per year. Our country ranks 6th in corrugated cardboard production in Europe after Germany, France, Italy, England and Spain.
135 YEARS OF CORRUGATED CARTON
It can be designed as desired, does not pollute the environment thanks to its 100% recycling rate and due to the material it is made of, carries, preserves, stores it without disturbing the structure of the product it carries, does not harm human health thanks to the standard of production conditions, does not have any cleaning and return burden, labor in filling, unloading and storage Since it is an industrial product that saves time and money, can be processed due to the development of printing technologies, can act as a salesperson thanks to graphics and texts, has low stock and storage costs, does not impose additional transportation costs on the product due to its light weight, and also packs consumer packaging, it is a packaging material. used. Features like this make it the most preferred packaging material, there is no other packaging material with the features it has.
CORRUGATED CARTON INDUSTRY IN TURKEY
Turkey Cellulose and Paper Factories Inc. (SEKA) became the founder of the Turkish Corrugated Cardboard Industry by opening the first Corrugated Cardboard Factory in its Izmit facilities in 1954. The private sector started to be interested in corrugated cardboard investment and production after 1960. The fastest development period of the Turkish Corrugated Cardboard Industry was 1975-1995. Starting in 1981, large enterprises focused on high-capacity investments based on advanced technology, and some of them commissioned their second and third corrugated lines. SEKA, the only state institution in the Turkish Corrugated Cardboard Industry, sold its Corrugated and Koli Fabrikası in 1993 and withdrew from this field.
